Today’s blog will be about Coconut oil.
What I love about it is that it’s natural and very versatile. In today’s post I will tell you how to select the right coconut oil.
To start from the basics, Coconut oil is a tropical oil that comes from coconuts.
It comes from the processing of the flesh of a mature coconut.
Processing: There are 2 types of processing. Type 1: Refined (Industrially manufactured oil)
Type 2: Unrefined (As natural as possible) Also called “pure” or “virgin” oil
Refined coconut oil is made from copra, which is dried coconut meat.
It gets chemically treated with pesticides and chemicals to prevent rotting because it is often transported to Europe and other countries.
Then the copra oil gets refined, bleached and deodorized to make it edible.
You find a lot of these coconut oils in supermarkets & stores.
They are often very cheap, but they are not beneficial at all!
I never use refined coconut oil and I would advice you to do the same!
Unrefined coconut oil is made from fresh coconut meat.
The oil is either extracted by a quick dry method or trough a wet mill process. It is either dried quickly so that the oil can be pressed out mechanically or the coconut meat is processed into coconut milk and gets boiled, strained or fermented. Using enzymes or centrifuges the milk is separated from the oil.
Both these processes are quick so it does not require additives or bleaching.
I highly recommend to use unrefined virgin coconut oil, because it’s the most natural.
So how do I know which coconut oil is unrefined?
– Read the labels check if it says virgin, extra virgin, pure or raw.
– Check the color of the coconut oil, the grayer it looks the more natural it is. Super white coconut oil is usually refined.
– Price. Good (unrefined) coconut oil is mostly costlier.
– Odour; Most unrefined coconut oils actually smell like coconut. Not all of them though!
What coconut oil do I use:
I use Tiana coconut oil, It’s raw, extra virgin & organic.
You can buy it at Holland & Barret. http://www.hollandandbarrett.nl
One pot costs 18 euros but it’s totally worth it! It smells really good and it’s super yummy too!
I will be writing another article soon about the uses of coconut oil. Stay tuned!
